Tens of thousands of chemical substances are an intrinsic part of our modern life. Some are byproducts of industrial and agricultural processes, while others have been designed as structural materials to be used in the products we consume. Obviously not all chemicals are bad but many are toxic and their harm to our environment and our health outweighs their benefits. Think of our domestic appliances, detergents, pharmaceuticals, computers, etc. All of these products have made our lives easier and more comfortable, but they do involve the use of chemicals to varying degrees.
Toxic chemicals are released into the environment every single day. It affects the water, land and air. The future of our planet and our children will ultimately be affected. Potential adverse effects of toxins include acute poisoning, cancers, neurological disorders, and birth defects. In terms of the environment, harmful chemicals can trigger eutrophication of water bodies, ozone depletion and pose a threat to very sensitive ecosystems and biodiversity.
